Hello to all our art and poetry friends! 2006 was a very good year and we are looking forward to what 2007 has in store. The Twomey Gallery Holiday show was a success with new and familiar faces gracing our little gallery. We will send out the list of shows for 2007 soon. Victoria has published a new book of poetry and will read from it at the Hecksher Museum in early February. Both James and Victoria will participate in the Gallery North Winners Circle that same month.

That Particular Summer
By Victoria Twomey

last day of school
flying out of that brick prison
a noisy flock of magpies, set free
flying, fanning out over that particular summer

there were lumbering brass bands in the gazebo
children running barefoot across cool park grass
laughter of the neighbor's late-night parties
drifting up to my bedroom window
through the thick mosquito night

a July boy climbed to the top of the highest tree
swung out on a rope
too young for fear

a June girl went everywhere with me
we sliced our thumbs with sharp grass
united the blood in an unbreakable pact

we were firewalkers on burning sand
giggled at lovers we caught kissing in dune grass
saw crawling creatures uncovered by a receding ocean
inhaled the green aroma of baking seaweed
swam until blue-lipped and finger-puckered

outdoors and indoors entwined
ocean breeze in the bedroom
sand in the rug
i slept with my sister and the crickets on the porch
dark for a blanket, moon for a nightlight

i read a forbidden paperback with tantalizing words
anxiously waited for teenage years
not knowing that particular summer
would later stand out like a diamond in sand
the one summer i would choose to believe
was just like all the rest
